Job Overview
Boardman Clark seeks an experienced Legal Assistant to work in our Immigration Practice Group. The Legal Assistant will be responsible for carrying out administrative services and providing support to attorneys with various immigration matters (family-based petitions, employment-based petitions, deportation defense, and asylum and humanitarian applications). The Immigration Legal Assistant will have a definite attention to detail, a strong work ethic, exceptional problem-solving skills and comfort working in a fast-paced and dynamic workplace.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Provide written and verbal Spanish-English translation.
- Draft, edit, and proofread correspondence, application forms, court pleadings, and other legal documents.
- File pleadings in state and federal court.
- Open new client matters and initiate conflict checks.
- Organize and maintain filings (including electronic filing) and files.
- Assist timekeepers with tracking deadlines and organizing projects.
- Type from rough draft, handwritten materials and/or dictation into proper format.
- Schedule and calendar appointments and meetings; make travel arrangements and complete expense reports.
- Serve as back-up to other assistants.
- Perform other tasks as assigned, including sharing in additional administrative duties.
- Remain mindful and responsive to cultural barriers.
Qualifications
- Experience as an immigration legal assistant, 3+ years preferred.
- Strong skills in word processing and computer use; proficiency in MS Office Products (Word, Outlook, Excel), Adobe Acrobat.
- Proficiency in English and Spanish is essential.
- Experience filing with state and federal courts. Ability to read and understand court rules, ensure compliance with court rules and assigned judge’s individual rules and practices.
- High attention to detail and sensitivity to confidential materials.
- Ability to work independently and anticipate needed tasks to complete projects.
- Ability and willingness to learn new electronic programs.
- Excellent grammar, proofreading and organizational skills.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- High school diploma required.
