Patent Data Analytics Tool
03.15.17
For those who haven’t looked lately, the USPTO has added some great new features to its PatentsView tool. PatentsView is a patent data tool that provides patent data and analysis in a visual form. The new interface allows users to investigate and evaluate relations, locations, and comparisons of US patents.
As of the date of this post, the data is current through December 16, 2016; and depending upon the selected tool, the date range of available information will vary, but the information available is very informative regarding patent trends. For example, in “relationships” a user can see the relation behind the 100 most cited patents granted since 2001 and look at the inventors and assignees on those patents. Patents are shown in linked clusters based upon inventors, assignees, or granted patents. These clusters are also tied to related locations and technology areas. In “locations,” users can see an interactive map showing where inventors and assignees have been granted patents since 2012. A user can drill down into the map and select various bubbles to see data for particular areas. In “comparisons” users can see patterns in innovation across locations and across technology areas year over year starting from as early as 1976.
Not only can one see the broader data analytics, but a user can drill down to each patent, each inventor, each law firm, and each location to get comprehensive details on various topics.
